Changing behavior of ASP.NET 2.0 wrapped WebPart
When you create a webpart in ASP.NET 2.0 by adding a user control to the WebPartZone, te control will be wrapped inside a GenericWebPart during runtime. This saves you from the trouble of having to derive from WebPart or implement IWebPart yourself. You do not get the full set of possibilities with such... Read More...

TechEd is love
Like Don Box always used to say: "COM is love". But guess what? TechEd is also a place of love. Check out Frans and Paul , both of which reported on a lovely day ( here and here ) the three of us spent together "discussing" (yeah, right). Good thing this happened late in the afternoon and without alcohol... Read More...

Simpler version of trick to watch TechEd streams
Roy Osherove reported a trick to watch the sessions of the US TechEd 2005. Paul already mentioned this posting. But it's way too complicated: browsing one site and then composing the URL for another site. Why not go to this URL: http://microsoft.sitestream.com/TechEd2005/ Much simpler. Update : Unfortunately... Read More...

DEV466: VSTS: Enterprise-Class Source Control
The new source control mechanism/store in Visual Studio Team Systems is not based on Visual SourceSafe. It has a new set of features that are pretty cool: Shelving, which is similar to creating a private branch, but in a better and formalized way. Checking policies on a per-project basis. These are evaluated... Read More...

A day with Paul Gielens
I spent most of the day visiting the same sessions as Paul Gielens did. We spent lunch together and just kept talking right till the party. Boy, did I have a blast exchanging ideas with Paul. The guy is way ahead of me (and most of the Dutch developers) on architecture and using design methodologies... Read More...

Internals of Indigo (CTS467)
Some random notes that I picked up during this massive-info talk (again 9+) Messaging layer will be used by lots of Microsoft products like BizTalk or ADO.NET. It's the lower layer of Indigo and involves getting data around. Indigo message are CLR representations of the SOAP infoset. The Indigo message... Read More...

ARC419 The Grey Area of Implementing Services Using Object-Oriented Technologies
Problem 1: You might not always get want you want When services share types you will have problems because the generated proxies also have client-side representations of the shared types. (BTW, in ASMX 2.0 this is less of a problem, since wsdl.exe has a /sharetypes parameter). You will not be able to... Read More...

Champions off to Electronic Sports World Cup
In the first weekend of June the Electronic Sports World Cup qualifier was held in the "Beurs van Berlage" in Amsterdam. Great place to have a LAN tournament. Champions eSports Association was there and seeded first. We also won the qualifier pretty easily. That means that we get to go to the ESWC finals... Read More...

Great place to meet people
When you are looking for certain people at a jumbo-sized venue like the Amsterdam RAI with over 7 thousand people squirming around like ants, you won't find them. Still, I met the following people today and spoke to them: Sander Gerz ( ToDotNet ) Foppe Weijer, Jan Kamphuis and Will Heessels ( Provincie... Read More...

Mixed feelings on keynotes sessions
Shame on me, but this was my first ever keynote session on a TechEd (even though I have been to 5 TechEds before). I did see the keynote of the Professional Developer Conference (PDC) in 2003. That one rocked. It was aweome to see Bill Gates mock himself in a documentary style clip of about 15 minutes... Read More...

Arrived at TechEd
Just arrived at the TechEd. Registration went smooth. No line (I got to use the MCT/MVP non-existent queue, but the others were not too bad either) to receive my passes and collect the bag. Each edition of TechEd it is always a surprise as to what bag and shirt you get. Well, this year's t-shirt is blue... Read More...

Assembly binding failures no longer logged by default
Just came across this little message in a Yellow-Screen-Of-Death of ASP.NET 2.0: WRN: Assembly binding logging is turned OFF. To enable assembly bind failure logging, set the registry value [HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Fusion!EnableLog] (DWORD) to 1. Note: There is some performance penalty associated with... Read More...
